Review: Terrier by Tamora Pierce

Terrier is the first book in the Beka Cooper legend by Tamora Pierce.

Beka Cooper, a young Provost’s Guard, is learning the ropes as a new Dog (what the Guard are called). Beka’s known she wanted to be a Dog for years, and now her dream is coming true. She even hears the voices of the dead, and they lead her towards murderers.

Except, two giant cases are going on right under the feet of the Dogs, and Beka is smack in the middle. Reporting to her senior dogs, Beka ferrets out the truth of the Shadow Snake case as well as that of many missing diggers for fire opals. She’s got an unusual way of finding information, but it works.
